Scenic Journey Aboard Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

One of the most unique and luxurious modes of transportation I’ve experienced while traveling was a scenic journey aboard the Belmond Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. This legendary train, with its vintage 1920s carriages and old-world glamour, felt like stepping into a different era.

What made it so special was the sheer elegance and attention to detail. From the moment I boarded, the polished wood panels, plush velvet seating, and art deco design created an atmosphere of timeless sophistication. The service was impeccable—white-gloved staff ensured every moment felt indulgent, from the perfectly poured champagne to the multi-course gourmet meals served on fine china.

As the train glided through the European countryside, the ever-changing scenery outside the window became part of the experience. Whether passing through the snow-capped Alps or rolling green fields of France, every view felt like a moving painting. At night, retiring to a beautifully restored sleeper cabin and waking up to breakfast in bed while watching the sunrise over the Italian countryside was pure magic.

This journey wasn’t just about getting from one place to another—it was about embracing the romance of slow travel, where the journey itself became the destination. It was a reminder that luxury isn’t just about extravagance, but also about savoring the experience, the history, and the artistry of travel.

Speedboat Safari on Savegre River

The mode of transportation is only as good as the experience. I’ve taken motorcycles, luxury cars, yachts, etc., but my favorite experience was a speedboat on the Savegre River in Costa Rica with my family. We were traveling to a luxury eco-lodge on the border of Corcovado National Park, winding through the estuary to reach the Pacific Ocean before landing at the lodge’s coastline. Our captain and guides turned the boat ride into a safari along the way, pointing out the wildlife we were eager to see in the area: a troop of spider monkeys, a caiman, a boa constrictor, a stork bird, and more. The transport from point A to point B became one of our favorite overall experiences.

Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Cappadocia

One of the most unique and memorable modes of transportation I’ve experienced was a hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia, Turkey. What made it special was the peacefulness of floating above Cappadocia’s incredible landscape and the breathtaking views of the rock formations and valleys. It was a calm, yet exciting way to see the area from a different perspective, making it a totally unforgettable experience.

Private Seaplane to Maldives Resort

Oh, hands down, it has to be that time I took a private seaplane to a resort in the Maldives. Because, you know, regular boats are for peasants (kidding…mostly). There’s just something ridiculously extra about gliding over impossibly blue water, feeling like a Bond villain about to touch down on their secret island lair. The best part? No traffic, no screaming babies, and my feet never had to touch an airport floor. Just pure, uninterrupted luxury—until I had to awkwardly climb out onto a floating dock in front of the entire resort staff, trying to look graceful and totally not like I was about to faceplant into the ocean.

Horseback Ride to Island Beach

This may not sound luxurious to some, but traveling by horseback to an island beach was the most memorable mode of transportation I’ve ever indulged in. There’s something about seeing hoofprints in the sand, feeling the gentle breeze on your skin and hearing the crash of waves that makes the world melt away. I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.

Chartered Seaplane to Great Barrier Reef

When my wife and I were in Australia a few decades ago, we assumed that the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest living thing, would be easy to visit. But we assumed wrong after four of our five planned diving days were canceled.

Though the GBR is about half the size of Texas—and can be seen from outer space—its remote location off the coast of Far North Queensland creates a logistical nightmare when trying to visit it on a short vacation. After our three-day liveaboard dive boat was canceled, we took a ferry to a resort on Hamilton Island for two nights, part of the Whitsundays in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.

However, that boat from Airlie Beach on the mainland was not available later that day to ferry us over to the scuba diving pontoon that our resort shared with Club Med. Even worse, it was pre-booked the following day by a cruise ship.

So in desperation to dive, we chartered a private seaplane the next morning for a 30-minute flight. A torrential rain caused that early flight to be canceled, but we flew there in clear skies and landed on the water in the afternoon.

It was a wonderful experience with just the pilot, another couple, my wife, and me in the plane. Though my partner is normally a nervous flyer, the fact that our plane was seaworthy allayed her fears and made the day even more enjoyable.

Helicopter Ride to Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge

Taking the helicopter during my visit to the Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge in British Columbia wasn’t just transportation—it was an experience that elevated the whole trip. Helicopter travel is often associated with luxury, but in this case, it was also a key connection to the destination. From the moment the rotors started to spin, I knew this was going to be something special.

What made it unforgettable was the perspective. Seeing the vast wilderness—dense forest, winding rivers, and the Pacific coastline—was humbling and exhilarating. It wasn’t just about the scenery—it was about being part of something bigger. That sense of exclusivity and immersion made the experience not just luxurious, but meaningful. Unlike other forms of travel, which can feel routine, this journey made me appreciate the natural beauty and remoteness of the place.

From a traveler’s perspective, unique modes of transport like this can redefine what luxury means. They combine comfort and adventure and are as much about the journey as the destination. Helicopter rides, luxury trains, or private yachts allow you to engage with your surroundings in a whole different way and are perfect for those looking for something special.

If you’re planning a trip, I’d recommend thinking about how transport can add to your experience, not just be a means to an end. If your destination is known for its natural beauty like British Columbia, aerial views can add a whole new dimension. Ultimately, these choices aren’t just about indulgence—they’re about creating moments that stay with you long after the trip is over.

Driving a Ferrari on the German Autobahn

I once rented a Ferrari once to experience the German autobahn in all its glory. The roar of the engine and the sense of unfiltered speed was unlike anything I’d felt before (especially on those unrestricted stretches where you can truly push the car). Blasting past rolling hills and charming villages, I realized it wasn’t just about going fast; it was about tapping into a storied driving culture. The whole day felt like a bucket-list adventure, right down to the gas station pit stops where I chatted with fellow car enthusiasts. Having that kind of horsepower at my fingertips in a place that celebrates driving made it an unforgettable journey. It’s a memory that still brings a grin to my face whenever I think about it.

Mercedes-Maybach Van in Doha

The first was in Doha, Qatar, right after a long-haul flight. I’d arranged a private airport transfer to my hotel and expected a comfortable car—nothing fancy. But when I stepped outside, I was met with a Mercedes-Maybach van. I hadn’t even requested anything specific, so this felt like such an unexpected treat. After hours in the air, sliding into those buttery leather seats and relaxing in that space was next-level comfort. The next day, my husband and I toured the city in the same van, and it made the whole experience feel effortless and indulgent.

The second was at the Great Barrier Reef. I’m not a great swimmer, so instead of snorkeling, I booked a helicopter flight to see the reef from above. Let me tell you—it was absolutely worth it. Seeing the reef’s colors and patterns stretch out endlessly from the air was breathtaking. It gave me a completely different appreciation for how massive and beautiful it is, and I didn’t have to worry about, you know, staying afloat.

Private Yacht Charter in Mediterranean

One of the most unique and memorable modes of transportation I’ve experienced while traveling luxuriously was a private yacht charter in the Mediterranean. The experience was special because it offered unparalleled privacy, comfort, and personalized service. We had the freedom to explore picturesque coastal towns and secluded coves at our own pace, all while enjoying gourmet meals prepared by a private chef and taking in breathtaking views from the deck.

The yacht’s luxurious amenities, including spacious cabins, a jacuzzi, and water sports equipment, made the journey even more enjoyable. The attentive crew ensured that every detail was taken care of, making it a truly unforgettable and indulgent experience.
