Combine Cashmere Throws With Raw Silk Pillows

Interior design gains depth through strategic textile placement. I combine cashmere throws with raw silk pillows to create visual interest and tactile appeal in living spaces. The interplay of smooth and textured surfaces elevates the room’s sophistication while maintaining comfort.

My preferred approach involves mixing natural fibers like Belgian linen curtains with mohair accent pillows. This combination adds warmth and creates subtle contrasts throughout the space. I position velvet throws at a 45-degree angle on sofas and layer different sized pillows—placing larger ones in the back and smaller ones in front—to build dimension. For window treatments, I install floor-to-ceiling panels using heavyweight fabrics like damask or jacquard, allowing them to pool slightly at the bottom for a refined appearance.

Create Cozy Nooks With Chunky Knit Throws

I love creating cozy nooks in my Westport listings by layering different textures—my go-to combo is a chunky knit throw draped diagonally across a corner chair, topped with a silky accent pillow. After years of staging homes, I’ve found that mixing three different textile textures, like smooth velvet curtains with nubby linen pillows and a plush wool throw, creates that perfect luxurious feel that buyers can’t resist.

Layer Different Materials For Added Dimension

Texture in the form of throws, pillows, or curtains are some of the best options that one can consider in the guest as well as the master bedroom to add layers of luxury to the room. I like layering different kinds of materials because it gives space more dimension and trying so many different soft velvets, rich linens, and comfy knits. For example, putting a thick woolen over a silky upholstery makes for a good feel and a rich look at the same time. I select throws and pillows in either the same color to tie in the look, or a shade different from the main color scheme, and the contrasting texture ensures that it does not get boring.

Some of the things I prefer working with are velvet, cashmere, and linen. Velvet in jewel tones adds an immediate layer of luxury to a room, as we saw in the use of the magenta fabric on the chairs below. I prefer using it on cushions or seat cushions for an added touch of opulence. Whereas velvet feels very rich and luxurious, linen has a more relaxed, country style and makes for a good marriage of the two materials. That’s great for curtains and any large decorative pillows, it also brings some texture and lightness to the room. I also like to put faux fur throws during winter since they create a perfect layer to cuddle in.

As for styling, I pay much attention to making the clothes look uniform while at the same time being comfortable. When arranging pillows, I mostly stack them in odd numbers and the sizes differ combining large ones and small ones with textured ones. Regarding curtains, the best thing is to install them above the frames to get the impression of a higher ceiling, thus the space looks larger. Applying a couple of assorted textures as well as creating and layering a textile with some intention can tremendously change the look of any room into an elegant as well and warmly welcoming space.

Mix Materials For A Curated Look

Okay, so, do you know how a room can sometimes feel a bit flat? Well, this is where fabrics come in to save the day. From your soft blankets to throws for the couch, these little touches will make your home feel like home.

When it comes to the best materials you can go for, I really like a mix of materials to create texture in the home. Velvet is a great choice to add some richness to the room, especially in things like an accent pillow (pro tip, velvet in jewel tones will make the best kind of statement). If you’re after something more modern and minimal, linen will add a breath of fresh air to the room, particularly when you use it for curtains. Pick what feels the most like you!

Now, circling back to what I said about mixing materials, I really want to touch on this. Say that you went for the velvet pillow, and also wanted the linen curtains, the contrast between the two materials adds a “curated, but not too curated” look to the room. If you want to do this well, just make sure to pair the right colors together, this will make the space look layered—which makes the room look more interesting!

Balance Colors And Textures For Depth

When designing a room, layering colors and textures can make the space visually captivating. The contrast between light and dark adds depth to the overall design. I like to maintain a balance; for instance, if the flooring or rug is dark, I prefer lighter window treatments for contrast. Incorporating textiles with varied textures—such as fringe, velvet, or a nubby finish—enhances the luxurious feel of the design and these can be used in throws or pillows.

Use Roller Shades For Texture And Luxury

Adding roller window shades in various colors and finishes is one of our favorite ways to elevate a space with layers of texture and luxury. We love using high-quality, textured fabrics in our roller shades to bring sophistication and depth to any room. Materials with a subtle sheen or intricate weave add visual interest and complement other elements like throws, pillows, or even hardwood and natural stone finishes. When paired with soft textiles, the right shade material can really make a room feel complete, combining comfort with an upscale look.

For an added touch of luxury, motorizing these shades and syncing them with smart home systems like Alexa or Google Home offers seamless convenience and a modern touch. This setup allows homeowners to adjust natural light and privacy with just a voice command, enhancing the home’s ambiance and functionality. The ability to control shade positions throughout the day also helps in layering lighting, balancing the brightness for a warm, welcoming feel at any hour. This integration is not only a luxury but an everyday delight that adds real value and comfort to a home.
